Giraffomania in France: Zarafa’s Legacy & Impact in the Early 19th Century

Posted on September 11, 2020 by admin
In the Footsteps of Zarafa, First Giraffe in France

Lake Forest College Donnelley and Lee Library invites you to explore the story and impact of Zarafa during an hour-long Zoom session on October 8, 2020 at 4 PM. This event will focus on Professor of French Cynthia Hahn’s new translation of In the Footsteps of Zarafa, First Giraffe in France: Chronicle of a Giraffomania (1826-1845), published by Rowman & Littlefield (2020).

Prof. Hahn welcomes Olivier Lebleu (Author) and Bruce Patterson (MacArthur Curator of Mammals at the Field Museum-Chicago, IL) to introduce the book. Through Zarafa, the panelists will explore history, politics, scientific debate, commercial and literary artifacts from early nineteenth century France. Lebleu will also highlight how the story of Zarafa points to attention and action needed to protect this wildly popular and endangered animal.

October 8, 4:00 PM CST
