Description
The User Experience and Electronic Resources Librarian provides leadership in the management of online library resources, including the library website and electronic resources, and serves as a member of the Reference and Instruction Team. This position has primary responsibility for the library website and the user experience of online library products, including virtual reference tools, discovery tools, and instructional technologies; and ensures that Library services, online resources, and instructional products are pleasurable to use and accessible. This position also manages the life cycle of library databases including selection, procurement, implementation, and annual review.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Library Website and User Experience
- Plan, develop and evaluate the Columbia College Chicago Library website; perform updates and revisions to website content; serve as liaison between the Library and the College’s Digital Group
- Integrate web-based library products into the library website including the discovery system, electronic resources, virtual reference tools, research guides, forms, blogs, etc.
- In collaboration with the Metadata and Systems Librarian, evaluate, develop, and customize the library discovery system including the user interface and search scopes to ensure an optimal user experience
- Assess the impact of technology-based services on Library users, including the Library website, discovery system, research guides, and other web-based systems through usability testing and the interpretation of usage statistics and analytics
- Review the accessibility of online library products and makes updates to ensure their usability for persons with disabilities
- Build library staff awareness of new and emerging technologies and electronic resources; collaborate with Academic Technology to provide support and training to faculty
Electronic Resources
- Manage the annual electronic resources cycle including evaluation, budgeting, procurement, implementation, and promotion of databases
- Lead the Electronic Resources Committee in the evaluation and selection/deselection of databases; works with liaison librarians to gather database feedback from faculty
- Serves as the main library contact with database vendors; work with vendor representatives to set up database trials, obtain price quotes, procure new resources after committee selection, and manage invoices
- Work closely with the Assistant to the Library Director to ensure database licenses and invoices are approved through the procurement process established by the Controller’s Office
- Work closely with the Metadata and Systems Librarian to ensure electronic resources are accessible through the library catalog, discovery system, authentication system, and link resolvers
- Troubleshoot technical problems with user access to electronic resources
Reference and Instruction
- Participate in the information literacy program and in development and delivery of online instructional content and classroom instruction
- Work closely with the Instruction and Online Learning Librarian to support development and evaluation of online instructional components
- Work closely with the Head of Reference and Instruction to assess and enhance delivery of research services
- Create widgets, videos, modules and other products that embed resources and services into the learning management system
- Serve as a library liaison with one or more academic departments.
- Respond to reference inquiries and research consultation requests via email, chat, phone, video conferencing software, and/or in-person
