Summary
The Dean of the Library and Archives reports to the Provost and oversees the Buswell Memorial Library, College Archives, Special Collections, the Marion E. Wade Center, Billy Graham Center Archives, the Billy Graham Center Museum, and supervises approximately 35 faculty and staff. This is an administrative position with faculty rank and The Dean of the Library and Archives is a member of the Senior Academic Leadership team.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Model a personal and living evangelical Protestant faith that is consistent with Wheaton College’s theological distinctiveness as expressed in its Statement of Faith and Community Covenant.
- Contribute to the design and functional aesthetic of a planned expanded Library facility.
- Provide vision for the centrality of the academic function and physical space of the Library to the mission of the College.
- Serve as an external champion and spokesperson for the Library and Archives. Participate in fundraising efforts for library and archival facilities and resources. Represent the College to various external consortia and associations.
- Advocate for library and archival needs, budget, and strategy; effectively allocate and manage financial and other resources; Recommend to the Provost budgetary requests and appropriate allocation of academic resources to achieve the mission and goals of the division and of the College.
- Oversee approximately 35 faculty and staff with direct supervision of the Director of the Billy Graham Center Archives, the Director of the Marion E. Wade Center, the Library Operations Manager, and nine library faculty members.
- Develop policies and programs that enable an exceptional scholarly culture. Provide strategic guidance for the development of library and archival print and digital collections, integrating traditional and new forms of publication, vendor platforms and services, archival practices, preservation, and digitization.
- Oversee the development and management of the library and archival technological environment, identify information needs, and integrate new technologies to support the teaching and learning mission of the College. In partnership with the faculty, develop and advocate for information-literacy instruction embedded in the general education curriculum (Christ at the Core) and for similar instruction throughout undergraduate and graduate programming.
- Facilitate excellence among the library faculty in librarianship, scholarship, spiritual formation, integration of Christian faith and learning, and institutional citizenship.
- Recruit new faculty candidates and recommend to the Provost qualified faculty for divisional appointment; b) administer the various formative and summative review processes mandated for faculty and staff by College policy; and c) make reappointment, promotion, and other appropriate recommendations regarding faculty to the Provost.
- Serve on the Provost’s Senior Academic Leadership Team and contribute to the development and maintenance of College-wide and divisional policies and programs.
- Collaborate with various campus committees, units, faculty, and administrators to advance teaching, learning, and research.
- Actively participate, conduct scholarship and contribute leadership to the academic library/archival profession.
- Serve as copyright advisor to the campus community.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A master’s degree in library, archival, or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or foreign equivalent. An additional PhD in an academic discipline is preferred.
- In-depth understanding of academic library and archival resources and services; well-informed and reflective about ongoing developments in academic libraries and archives, higher education, academic technology, and related spheres.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills with a track record in representing a library to internal and external constituents.
- Demonstrated success in leadership and administration of an academic library and archives with the visionary, relational, and entrepreneurial gifts that enable these units to thrive in a continually changing environment.
- History of professional development of faculty and staff with success in managing complex relationships.
- Broad academic interests and intellectual curiosity.
- Commitment to the academic success of faculty and students in a Christ-Centered liberal-arts college and graduate school. Demonstrated understanding of the academic research process, resources, and the needs of faculty and students.
- Basic Biblical literacy and general knowledge of Evangelical Protestant doctrine and theology.
