Donnelley and Lee Library at Lake Forest College invites you to explore the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair through the lens of archaeology via an online Zoom program on April 22nd at 4:30 PM . Rebecca Graff, Associate Professor of Anthropology, will share archaeological and archival research from sites associated with the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, including the Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Charnley-Persky House.
Attendees will discover the material remains of the Fair and explore how historical trends continue into the present. These items are detailed in Graff’s recent book Disposing of Modernity: The Archaeology of Garbage and Consumerism during Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair, a first-of-its-kind study that reveals changing consumer patterns, notions of domesticity and progress, and anxieties about the modernization of society.
This book talk will be recorded! If you can’t attend, but would like to view the program, please reach out to Cathy Mayer (cmayer@lakeforest.edu) to request access.
